Whats it take to play this game online?

I played MOOII a few years ago on Kali, thought I'd see if anyone was around and still playing it, but when I started looking at what I needed to do, I was completely lost.

I'm running XP with sp2. I can't get the dos version to install. I get a black screen with cursor. Seems to be locked. I tried the 95 version and it runs ok. Whats it take to make the dos version run?

I read about dosbox, but seems thats for running game after it is installed. Is that correct?

Also, I'm lost about the IRC chat channel thing. Exactly what do I do to meet other people for game play, assuming I can get it to run.
