What update will I need to download to be able to play online? And how many games are usually online?

And how many games are usually online?
join irc://irc.quakenet.org/moo2 channel .There are 10-20 players, some iddling but some willing to start a game.

Okay this isn't helping. I'm not sure I can get this installed due to equipment on my computer.
I don't know what crap we have on here and I don't know how to check what I have.
