Kali on Linux

Postby KFizzle » Thu Jun 01, 2006 4:55 am

hey i got a quick question here:

anyone got kali to work on linux??

i know they have a gtkali port for kali on linux version 1.0 from back in 2000

i havent had any luck trying to install the program
it says i need gtk installed, but i already have gtk on my computer

the gtkali configure file says it cant find the path for the gtk-config files

i was wondering if anyone knew how to setup the path for the gtk-config files

i have gtk 2.0 on my linux installed.

i use debian 3.1 r2 linux

anyhow, i got orion1.40 to work on my linux using dosbox, and it runs pretty good.

i was just wondering if anyone knew anything about linux kali, because ive seen maybe one or two people randomly show up on the moo servers with linux, so i was just wondering.

any help would be appreciated :)

woohoo!

guess what? i finally got moo2 to work over cross platforms with alex.
and it runs pretty fluidly so farf, not too much problems or anything.

i found all the kali stuff i needed.

this are all linux info pretty much:
there's two kali ports for linux, xkali and gtkali. xkali is the newer client.
i got xkali to work for me,

xkali requires your 6 digit serial from /games on windows kali, and your rest of the account info, then for the servers ip you just put in the kali chat room server ip

you can get kali chat room server ip by joining a room on windows kali and it will tell you the room ip there

i still havent figured out how to get a servers list on xkali, or figured out the kali actual server ip etc.. sucks i know..

anyhow thats xkali setup on linux
----------------------------------------

you dont even need kali to play games on linux, but it helps to find a place to find people to play with thats why xkali helps since thats where most people are at.

everything else is dosbox. im sure everyone is familiar with dosbox by now.

to install dosbox on linux, make sure you use a source install and not a regular package, like rpm or deb package.

if you use source install, you can use the configure file in your source install to figure out which dependancies you need. dependancies are drivers that you need to make the install or program work. if you dont have the dependancies then the install wont even work.

normally, you need SDL 1.2 to make dosbox work, you need SDL NET drivers for the IPX inside dosbox to work, and it doesnt hurt to install the SDL SOUND drivers for better sound support inside your dosbox. normally you want to install all the dev or development packages for these 3 files. since thats what dosbox requires to compile itself. normally the packages for these files are started with either dev whatever packages or lib whatever packages. in debian, which is the linux i use, they all start with lib, and if you download their 2 dvds, or just the 1st one, then you shouldnt have a problem.

of course, one reason why linux works better in my opinion, is the fact that all these source packages with their configure files, manually self configure these installs to as close as compliant with your computer as much as possible. that way you get better performance and speed from these programs,.

once you have your dosbox configured, you just do a make, then a make install and it installs itself.

after that, you need to enable the ipx inside the configuration file.

open up a shelll or console and go to your dosbox folder, and run dosbox

inside dosbox run the command:
config -writeconf name_whatever_file.conf

then it will create a config file by that name. i use the dosbox.conf name for my file on linux. edit that file and put TRUE for ipx inside the file. then copy that file to your root folder with the name ".dosboxrc"

that's .dosboxrc with a period at the beginning.

most linux conf files are in root i think
now whenever you run dosbox in your linux it will always open that default file .dosboxrc for your configurations. windows uses the dosbox.conf for its default configuration.

now you should be able to start dosbox
and run commands ipxnet startserver/connect etc to play any ipx supported dos games online.

remember: you wont even have ipxnet inside your dosbox, if you dont install the SDL NET driver first!!!

hope this little faq helps everyone!!!!

KALI ON LINUX

Postby KFizzle » Wed Jun 07, 2006 9:49 pm

alright,
there's 3 ways to get kali to work on linux

xkali
=====
basically install xkali, and use your 6 digit serial number (not the 10 digit one)
you can get that from /games in win kali
and fix up settings, and then put this for server ip
66.188.76.71:2222 thats the moo2 server ip

you can put in the kali master server ip which is 66.188.76.71:6666
but it doesnt load any of the server list, and it takes a while to load stuff
easier to just connect to moo2 server straight

cons on xkali:
whenever someone pm's you, there's just a little bar on top of xkali that you have to click to see who pm'ed you otherwise you wouldnt notice it
otherwise xkali is fast and stable and it works, great for using as chat

gtkali
========
gtkali works as well
and for the server ip use 66.188.76.71:6666
for default server you can use 66.188.76.71:2222
and it will load all servers list this time
you can join just about any chat server now unlike xkali

cons:
you cant see your own chat in main screen
otherwise it works

windows kali 2
=============
this works on your linux as well
you have to have wine installed, and use wine to run win kali 2
just one:
you have to set up your ip and ports to let kali 2 work in settings
especially if youre behind a firewall or using a router

pros:
good ol' fashioned kali 2

cons:
you get 2 error messages about ipx not working
like gtkali, you can see your own chat in main screen
also cant see own chat in pms

but stem found a way around that:
every time you pm,
type any text, then click chat settings, and click set to default settings in chat font setttings, then press delete a few times on chat
then you should be able to see your own text

you still cant see own text in main chat though, only in pms, and you have to do that for every pm

otherwise, you dont really use any of these kalis to actually load games on linux, since we use dosbox to play moo2 on linux online
kali is just there for chat and finding players

hope this helps!!
