I'm still running XP pro. So long as you can get dosbox running you should also be able to run MOO2 dos version. Not sure about the Windows version but there should be backwards compatibility built in to it somewhere.

Hello!
I play it on vista with DOSbox and its not a problem for me.
Sometimes I get some strange anoying jitter in the music, but that might be because of DOSbox settings or someting else, I dont know.

I am having some issues with vista and moo2. Apparently I am not alone, though the only reference ive seen so far was a not very helpfull wiki warning about using admin status to edit the config file. The problem seems to have something to do with file typing. In addtion to not being able to edit the config file (with out destroying the file type) dosbox does not seem to find the standard dosbox.conf either

i issued all the commands by hand instead of using the config file and I still had a problem with my patched moo2 bombing when it looked for more files on the cd!

this is my first evening with vista, so it may be all to easy to fix, but dont expect to power up out of the box without a hitch.

/me peels onion

Hello!
I will try to help.
The first thing I did was to copy the entire CD to my harddrive.
Then you can install the game from the harddrive to the same directory as the CD was copied. Change the path in Orion2cd.ini located in the orioncd folder on your harddrive.

This is what I got in my Orioncd.ini
c:\orion2cd
This is what I got in my Dosbox v0.72 config file:
# This is the configurationfile for DOSBox 0.72.
# Lines starting with a # are commentlines.
# They are used to (briefly) document the effect of each option.

[sdl]
# fullscreen -- Start dosbox directly in fullscreen.
# fulldouble -- Use double buffering in fullscreen.
# fullresolution -- What resolution to use for fullscreen: original or fixed size (e.g. 1024x768).
# windowresolution -- Scale the window to this size IF the output device supports hardware scaling.
# output -- What to use for output: surface,overlay,opengl,openglnb,ddraw.
# autolock -- Mouse will automatically lock, if you click on the screen.
# sensitiviy -- Mouse sensitivity.
# waitonerror -- Wait before closing the console if dosbox has an error.
# priority -- Priority levels for dosbox: lowest,lower,normal,higher,highest,pause (when not focussed).
# Second entry behind the comma is for when dosbox is not focused/minimized.
# mapperfile -- File used to load/save the key/event mappings from.
# usescancodes -- Avoid usage of symkeys, might not work on all operating systems.

fullscreen=false
fulldouble=false
fullresolution=original
windowresolution=original
output=overlay
autolock=true
sensitivity=100
waitonerror=true
priority=higher,normal
mapperfile=mapper.txt

[dosbox]
# language -- Select another language file.
# memsize -- Amount of memory DOSBox has in megabytes.
# machine -- The type of machine tries to emulate:hercules,cga,tandy,pcjr,vga.
# captures -- Directory where things like wave,midi,screenshot get captured.

language=
machine=vga
captures=capture
memsize=16

[render]
# frameskip -- How many frames DOSBox skips before drawing one.
# aspect -- Do aspect correction, if your output method doesn't support scaling this can slow things down!.
# scaler -- Scaler used to enlarge/enhance low resolution modes.
# Supported are none,normal2x,normal3x,advmame2x,advmame3x,hq2x,hq3x,
# 2xsai,super2xsai,supereagle,advinterp2x,advinterp3x,
# tv2x,tv3x,rgb2x,rgb3x,scan2x,scan3x.
# If forced is appended (like scaler=hq2x forced), the scaler will be used
# even if the result might not be desired.

frameskip=0
aspect=false
scaler=scan2x

[cpu]
# core -- CPU Core used in emulation: normal,simple,dynamic,auto.
# auto switches from normal to dynamic if appropriate.
# cycles -- Amount of instructions DOSBox tries to emulate each millisecond.
# Setting this value too high results in sound dropouts and lags.
# You can also let DOSBox guess the correct value by setting it to max.
# The default setting (auto) switches to max if appropriate.
# cycleup -- Amount of cycles to increase/decrease with keycombo.
# cycledown Setting it lower than 100 will be a percentage.

core=auto
cycles=auto
cycleup=500
cycledown=20
timesynched=false

[mixer]
# nosound -- Enable silent mode, sound is still emulated though.
# rate -- Mixer sample rate, setting any devices higher than this will
# probably lower their sound quality.
# blocksize -- Mixer block size, larger blocks might help sound stuttering
# but sound will also be more lagged.
# prebuffer -- How many milliseconds of data to keep on top of the blocksize.

nosound=false
rate=22050
blocksize=2048
prebuffer=10

[midi]
# mpu401 -- Type of MPU-401 to emulate: none, uart or intelligent.

Then I have a .bat file for named 1, one named 2 and so on.
The menu doesnt look good now, because the tabs and spaces got removed.

This is what I got in 14.bat (Master of Orion 2)
cd Orion2cd
orion2~1
cd..

When I quit the moo2 it shows the menu again, and I can choose another game or quit. :)

I recomend these other games you see in the menu to.
Espacially Death Rally, One Must Fall and Lotus.
Slicks n slide is a very fun to play multiplayer.

I hope it helped. :)

well, umm, maybe we are on a different frequency

the trouble i am having (still) is with file typing on vista. that is preventing me from locally creating a dosbox.conf file that is acceptable to dosbox.exe. Most frustrating since I can download one, or edit one on a non vista pc, and import it with no trouble at all.

The issues you seem to be addressing with the orioncd.ini redirection seems reasonable though I havnt gotten it to work. I can only run the orion install program from inside dosbox. When I do that, I find orion2.exe and its associated files in a subdirectory appended to the subdirectory used as the dosbox mount(ed subdirectory).

Some user had a similar problem, me seems. He mailed me:
I did figure it out what the problem was. Vista had created another copy of the dosbox.conf file in \AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files and when I launched dosbox it was referring to that file. So I deleted that file and it used the copy I had in the dosbox folder after that and it worked properly.

thx siron, kudos for a good piece of advice. I have gotten off the ground, though my real point is just that a vista installation required some os learning curve. (Alkari are evil)

That's what begins from using Vista, using "Program Files" and using win explorer as a filemanager at once: it ends in effete guessing or investigations about what win really does instead of whatever ye told it to do. Installing in some non-default directory (especially games) and using orthodox filemenager helps a lot even in less... err... "helpful"... XP. Just try...

Just "." seems to be enough. :)

Actually, it's what all those DosBox frontends should do. As well as easy access to custom dosbox configs, etc.
my real point is just that a vista installation required some os learning curve.
Really ? I heard it's very, very user-friendly and does most things without distracting user... :? Well, first of all, it requires strange desire to allocate some of your own machine's resources for things like extra DRMs, BitLocker Drive Encryption, whatever other new and wonderful M...soft Back Orifice™ they invented (exclusively for user's convenience, indubitably), this nice user-friendly "Program Files" save policing and so on. Only then that leaning curve issue appears. :twisted: That's why i'll prefer to learn things working under some mature OS and therefore are not turned inside out in each new version. Matter of taste, of course.

Point well taken.

I suppose the same thing was true the first time I booted MSdos. There was never an issue untill you do something unexpectedly reasonable. Later when you have sufficiently mastered the required digital etiquette you can exclaim the complete simplicity of doing it 'correctly'! :roll:
