Why do we play...

Postby vanddyr » Thu Feb 17, 2011 10:13 am

... the same game again and again?

I am new to the forum but have played MOO I and II since their releases, and I still enjoy playing them and other old strategy games on a regular basis. This has led me to wonder about why it is that some games can be played and replayed again and again. My wonder has been turned into the early stages of a master thesis and this is where you come into the picture!

In these early stages of the thesis I have made a survey that I need people to look at and hopefully complete for me. So if you feel like spending some minutes helping me greatly you can answer the questions in the survey at the end of the link below. If you don't have the time to complete it in one go it can be done in more, it saves your answers for later (as long as you re-access it from the same computer as you began completing it from).

Cheers in advance!

Kasper

PS. Should anyone have comments or suggestions for improvements to the survey or the thesis you are welcome to post them here:-)

Why is chess replayed? Or backgammon for example is 3 thousand years old. If you can answer this question, then you have the answer.

I suppose that's right, I cannot, however, answer that question, but I do find it interesting how those games you mention have managed to stay popular throughout the millenia.

The analogy can be made by this question: why people still drink water...if you find the aswer, you have the aswer.
