Auto-wins-battles bug?

I've repeated a bug now where, in tactical battle, you click "Auto" and as your last ship is moving click it again and some oddness happens.
It looks like a whole lot of things happen at once. The enemy force's turn instantly resolves, you hear the sounds of a ship firing its beams, but then you can get a glimpse of a marine invasion happening somehow somewhere.
The battle concludes and I win.
Granted, I was going to win that battle, but I still am not familiar with this bug or the hidden feature of sped-up-battles. Is anyone else?
The timing is questionable, too. I think I'm clicking "auto" as the last ship is moving, but I don't know when it registers the release of the mouse button.
