Production Races?

How in the world do you play production races? I'm trying to play all the stock races on Impossible Huge Prewarp games, and I finally beat it with Alkari. But moved on to Meklar is killing me, I'm following the basics pretty well, research feighters first, then colony base your homesystem. Then get research labs and auto factories.... but when I get 200 turns into the game with 3 battleships, and then big bad agressive mrrshan with ion cannons blow through my ships. I had fully upgraded fusion beams.
Is there a play through of vets doing impossible with stock races? Or just production races in general?
