Unable to even OPEN MOO2 WINXP/dos emulation

Postby CommodoreNomad » Sun Jan 22, 2006 1:31 am

Hey, all!

Sorry in advance if you've seen this before. I read all of the semi-relevant posts in this forum, and I couldn't find the answer to my question.

I recently bought a copy of MOO II for a friend, and we were trying to install it for DOS use on XP. However, we've been unable to make it run despite about 2.5 hours of trying!

I read the step-by-step "how to" guide on this site, but we couldn't get it to work. When we try to start the game (by double-clicking the shortcut on the desktop), this happens:

1) A DOS box thing comes up, with a white blinking underscore character ( _ ) in the upper left corner, as if something is happening.

2) After a few seconds, the white character turns red and continues to blink.

3) Nothing else happens! We've had to force-quit the program. Alas.

Has anyone else had this happen? What can I do to fix it?

(AFAIK, we were using XP home edition with SP2)

Oh, one more thing: there was no DOS installer on the cd I gave my friend, so we had to improvise some things. Could this be a factor?

Thanks in advance, everyone. I truly love this game, and I want to share it with my friends!
Signature to be completed at a later time.

Hi, Welcome to our forum!
Oh, one more thing: there was no DOS installer on the cd I gave my friend, so we had to improvise some things. Could this be a factor?
Yes, this is likely the problem if you are trying to install the DOS version manually from a CD that only has a windows version of the game on it.

Here is a list of the files that are installed when you install the DOS version. The items in RED are required. The items in GREEN are optional relating to sound:

The file ORIONCD.INI is created by the games installer. You will definately need to manually create this file. Use a Text editor. It must contain the path to the CD drive. There are many additional files on the CD that the game needs access to. Here is an example of what should be in the file:
  • D:\
If you are missing any of these files you may be able to get them from PK's site.

Good luck.

I got the same problem, but my white character doesn´t turnd into a red one.

U should read that thread, too.
